Dating back to 2017, Springfield High School has won 11 straight games at home since the opening of Robertson county's newest stadium.
On August 30th, the Jackets' extended that streak to 12 with a win against Clarksville High School, 21-15. Neither team disappointed on the big stage, giving a defensive showdown for the MyTV-30 Game of the Week.
Coach Wilson made yet another surprising move on the offensive side of the ball this week, bringing both Kevontez Hudson and Austyn Day out to share playing time at quarterback. The adjustment paid dividends for SHS, with Day throwing for nearly 140 yards and a touchdown and Hudson touting his athleticism throughout all four quarters.
While the dual-QB system may have benefited Springfield in some aspects, the size differential of both players created a constant theme of inaccurate snaps throughout the game: with Day standing at 6'1, and Hudson listed at 5'6, the Jackets' offensive line had difficulty determining who was at the helm (and in turn, how high to snap the ball).
Special teams played a crucial role for the Jackets', with a muffed kick scoop-and-score from Social Dweebs' Player of the Game Ze'rel Boyd generating the first points of the night for Springfield. Boyd kept a level head when asked about his thoughts after the highlight play: "I was trying to make a big play and get my team back on top."
The Jackets' special teams unit continued to result in another SHS touchdown, this time via a tackle of Clarksville kicker Andrew Irvin before a fourth down punt deep in their own territory. Day would find sophomore Keyshawn Robinson on a 5 yard slant to put Springfield ahead 14-3.
Clarksville would respond with a drive of their own, with a 40 yard strike from QB Davin Garringer. Jackets' special teams would prove valuable in this play as well, blocking Irvin's PAT, and giving Springfield a 5 point lead going into the half.
SHS' defense came up big in the third quarter, disrupting the Wildcat offense on every play. After another blocked kick from Springfield special teams, Hudson would scramble his way into the end zone for 6 more near the end of three.
After being shutout in the third, CHS running back Gabe Smith would find his way into the end zone for a Wildcat touchdown. Clarksville's spirited comeback would fall just shy thanks to a game-sealing interception right into the hands of senior Cale Jones with 2 minutes left in the fourth.
Springfield was looking for an identity or some home cooking in week two, and ended up finding both: a dual-quarterback system seemed to fit this offense like a glove, while special teams and defense found their groove that was missing from a week ago. Springfield will look to take this momentum into next week at home against 2-0 White House Heritage High School.
