Going into Wilson Central High School Friday night, SHS fans, students, players, and even coaches were looking for answers about their team. Whether it be offense or defense, players needed to step up in big ways to replicate the success of the last four seasons, the last two in particular.
All the Jackets left Lebanon with was more questions.
Outside of the first possession, Springfield seemed to be entirely out of gas (and motivation) from the kickoff: the Jackets' first offensive possession of 2019-20 started off strong with a few first downs, yet failed to put points on the board.
Immediately after WCHS turned the ball over on downs, SHS' offense allowed their first of two turnovers in the opening quarter, a fumble at their own six yard line. This ensued a 5-yard touchdown run from Wildcats' running back Seth Robinson.
Another turnover (this one an interception thrown by Kevontez Hudson off of a short route miscommunication) and Wilson Central capitalized with a 37 yard field goal to give Central a 10 point lead at the end of one.
The Wildcats proceeded to score an additional 13 points in the second (both rushing touchdowns, one failed PAT), as the Jackets were unable to stop Central’s three main backs in Ali, Hatchett, and Robinson.
Springfield's soul searching continued throughout the game in ways unthinkable: especially when Austyn Day came out with the offense to start the third quarter, as starter Kevontez Hudson was moved to wide receiver.
With Hudson being swapped at QB for the second half, it is important to mention that this is not the first time the junior has led an offense: as a freshman, Day played three games for Hillwood High School in Nashville. Although the stats shown are a very small sample size (8-17, 17 yards), experience definitely takes precedence in what could be a potential quarterback competition.
Hudson's replacement was effective in some measure throughout the second half, with the lone score (63 yard touchdown dash from Kevarious Smith) being orchestrated with Day at the helm.
Springfield would eventually lose this game 37-7, and with an arguably tougher opponent in the week to come (Clarksville High School), and a much larger crowd inside Springfield's stadium and out ("MY-TV 30 Game of the Week"), coach Wilson and the Jackets will look for some home cooking in a stadium they’ve only lost 1 game in since 2017.
Note: due to technical difficulties last week our usual broadcast was unavailable for the majority of the game. We would like to apologize for this inconvenience, and encourage you to watch live this Friday at 6:30 via the Social Dweebs YouTube channel.
